Following the seeming controversy that has trailed the installation of Fuji Lord, Wasiu Ayind a.k.a, Kwam 1, as the Mayegun of Yoruba land by the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi after a similar title the Aare Onakakanfo of Yoruba land, Iba Gani Adams conferred on popular human rights lawyer, Dr. Kayode Ajulo, about one year ago, Ajulo eventually broke the silence, saying , the installation of Ayinde as Mayegun of yorubaland does not bring about any controversy, that the two personalities are different but have complimentary role to play in the development of the Yoruba nation.
Speaking through his counsel, Akinola Oladimeji, Ajulo said while his own title as ‘The Mayegun’ Aare Ona kakanfo of Yoruba land, Wasiu Ayinde was conferred with ‘The Mayegun’ of Yoruba land. He noted that the institution of the ‘Mayegun’ is so great and sacred hence the decision of the Alaafin of Oyo to confer on Chief Wasiu Ayinde as the Mayegun of Yoruba land.
Recalling that Mayegun Akila was the 10th Mayegun Aare Onakakanfo of Yoruba land, Ajulo said his title is traceable In Yoruba history as he’s the 11th Mayegun of Aare Onakakanfo. From facts gathered from history, the last time this title was given was in the 17th century, during the time of the 12th Aare Ona Kakanfo, Iba Momodu Atanda Asubiaro Latoosa, the then 10th Mayegun Ojo Akila chaired the ‘’Board of Enquiry” on the murder of Efunsetan Aniwura, the famous Iyalode of Ibadan in 1864 when her Egba kins and kiths protested her assassination and justice.
Ajulo pointed out that as The Mayegun, he’s the conscience of the community, who is expected to constantly speak against the ills of the society. Consequently, the Mayegun himself has to be without blame.
Furthermore, he said ‘I never approached the Aare Onakakanfo to be given the title, but Aare, in his wisdom and based on his conviction of my commitment to the development of Yoruba race, after due consultations, he willingly bestowed on me the title of Mayegun Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland’.
He further noted that as part of the duties he’s been performing in his capacity as Mayegun, he and other members of the Aare in Council have been holding meetings every quarter in a years, aside the Adhoc committees constituted by the Aare Ona Kakanfo, where issues that bother on peace, unity, development and security of the Yoruba land are discuss. It will be recalled that last year, in the course of ensuring peace and security in Yoruba Land, Ajulo met with some vigilantes and bravely demanded for their dislodgement.
On a final note, he implored all Yoruba sons and daughter not let anyone use the issue of Mayegun to brew division and animosity among them, that the peace and unity of the Yoruba race is more paramount and so, should be upheld at all times.
